Favorite Bounty Hunters: May 2018 ComLINKS

*This post is part of a link up started by Jenmarie over at Anakin and His Angel. Each month she has a different galactic topic for us to explore and write about. This month we’re talking about our favorite galactic bounty hunter!

“Bounty hunters. We don’t need their scum.” // Admiral Piett, The Empire Strikes Back

When you hear “bounty hunters,” most people immediately think of Boba Fett. And rightly so! His awesome Mandalorian armor, his cool jet pack, and the fact that we never get to see his face (at least in the originals) makes him a really neat dude.

But I decided to focus on a character who only gets a few minutes of screen time, and one that was the first bounty hunter I met.

Zam Wessel.

Image from StarWars.com

A Clawdite from Zolan, Zam was a shapeshifter and could change her appearance to any kind of humanoid. Jango Fett had hired her to kill Padme Amidala. She first set an explosion on Padme’s ship, and then set kouhuns lose in Padme’s apartment. After both failing to kill the senator, Anakin and Obi-Wan chased her around Coruscant where they finally caught up to her outside of a bar. But before they could get any information from her, Jango Fett killed her with a poisonous dart.

So why do I think Zam Wessel is cool? One- she’s a girl! I love seeing Star Wars women playing powerful roles (even if they are a “bad guy”). Two- she has a cool outfit. I love the veil that covers the lower part of her face. It gives her a really mysterious vibe. Three- she’s an alien. I guess technically everyone in Star Wars is an alien, but I love that she isn’t quite a human.

I’d love to know your thoughts on Zam, or who your favorite bounty hunter is! Let me know in the comments!

Boho Geek Chic: Rope & Rose

Decorating a home is such a personal experience, and it is almost like a work of art in itself! A person’s home says a lot about them- their likes, their dislikes, their family structure, their tastes, etc. One of the biggest trends in home décor right now is the boho look!

That’s where Rope & Rose comes in! I was in awe with how beautiful her pieces were. They give off that cozy boho vibe that works in so many different décor trends! And one of my favorite things about this company is that it’s not just “another” business, but Brittney is a real human who has passions (for her family, macramé, and fandoms!).

All the heart eyes here!

And who better to tell you about their amazing business than the lady who runs it?!

Me: Hey girl! Thanks so much for joining us! I’m really excited to hear all about your business, and what makes it tick! Why don’t you tell us a little bit about yourself first?

Brittney: Well, currently I’m a Stay At Home mom to a crazy little 2 year old girl, and I make modern macramé as a side hustle. If you want my resume summary, I have a background in Graphic Design and Visual Communications and I used to work as a Wedding Venue Coordinator before I got pregnant. I used to be a Starbucks Barista and the word “Frappuccino happy hour” still makes me cringe. I consider myself a foodie and plan all my trips around places to eat. I enjoy long strolls through Target and my next small goal in life is to buy a summer jumpsuit.

Me: I can totally relate with Target! You mentioned that your side hustle is modern macramé. What made you decide to start doing that?

Brittney: My little sister is getting married this July, and she lives in Hawaii so she’s really into everything boho. She sent me a picture of a macramé wedding backdrop and was like “Hey, make this for me” and I was like “uh…. ok?”. And after hours of learning the basic knots of macramé I finally made my first macramé creation! It was a little chair back décor thing… I’m pretty sure I didn’t even keep it, but I remember being so proud of it and thinking it was so beautiful. Soon I got ADDICTED and made so many wall hangings that I filled my dining room and my husband said “Ok, we gotta get rid of these because we’re moving soon”. So I decided to try to sell them on Instagram to my friends. Soon people started asking me to do special orders and before I knew it, I had my own little business.

Me: I love that! It really seems like you have a true passion for what you do! What is your favorite part of having this business now?

Brittney: I really love it when I finish a piece I can stand back and look at it, and it gives me this feeling of peace and accomplishment that I’ve never experienced. It’s this indescribable feeling of “Oh my goodness, this is beautiful and even if no one in the world agrees with me, it’s still beautiful”. And as a creative, that feeling is priceless. It’s the driving force of an artist. Have you ever experienced that? A confidence so strong that its not dependent on the thoughts of others? If you never have, you need to… at least once in your life. It’s so freeing.

Me: This just gives me the warm fuzzies! I’ve experienced that to some extent, and you’re right- it really is so freeing! It seems like this is just the baby stage right now. Where do you hope this business takes you in the future?

Brittney: I would DIE if I could work with flowers more. I want to start doing events where I style parties or events. Or expand the “Rose” part of Rope & Rose and have a flower crown booth. Maybe to even be featured in weddings?!?! OMG I need to stop, I’m getting excited just thinking about it. lol! Or I would love to open a coffee shop/ art studio/ floral studio where I teach art classes and make coffee. Sorry, I dream pretty big. Haha!

Me: Hey! Big dreams are what make the world go round! I love these big dreams you have! Now, since we’re a geeky blog, we all are dying to know- what’s your favorite fandom right now?

Brittney: Currently? My last obsession was the ACOTAR series by Sarah J Mass. I’m a sucker for fairytale retellings. She did such an amazing job at world-building and character development. I actually decided to read her books because of the fan art on Pinterest and DeviantArt! Her characters are beautiful and have so much depth. And they’re very relatable. My sister and I could spend hours discussing the books and sending memes to each other. And the ACOTAR memes are so freaking funny! I seriously laugh so hard I cry sometimes… Don’t tell anyone. lol 😉 When I was younger (and had more free time) I was into manga and anime. You know those people who sat on the floor at Barnes & Noble and read manga? That was me. So my recent Anime obsession is Food Wars… if you don’t watch anime regularly I’m not sure if I recommend it for you, to be completely honest. It can be vulgar at times, but in Japan it’s a type of humor and it doesn’t bother me. It’s a special kind of humor and it’s ridiculous and hilarious at the same time. My husband and sister think I’m insane but I like it!

Me: Love it! That definitely makes life so much more fun! My family thinks I’m crazy the same way, so I feel you! You’re definitely a fangirl, so how do you incorporate that love into your business?

Brittney: I named a couple of my wall hangings after the terms and characters in some of my fave fandoms. Like I named a piece “The Eye” once because it looked like the Eye of Saur on from LOTR… and I recently named a piece Darth because I used black rope. Yes, like Darth Vader. Hahaha! It’s me exploring my dark side. My next book-inspired piece is a piece inspired by Rhysand or Feyre of ACOMAF. I want it to be a dark midnight blue or black and to look like wings! I just need to find the perfect blue.

Darth

Me: I’ve been eyeing that Darth hanging! It’s so fun- and gorgeous! You didn’t mention it, but I know you’re a Potterhead! So, we need to know all your stats!

Brittney: Hufflepuff Hogwarts house (Team Cedric FOREVER). Pukwudgie Ilvermorny house. Dolphin patronus. Wand made of Alder wood with a Phoenix feather core 12 ½” and slightly springy flexibility. And I prefer my butterbeer frozen.

Me: Puff Pride! Yah! Well, one last thing before you go. What would you tell people who want to start their own business?

Brittney: People don’t buy products. The buy brands… they buy dreams, goals, ideas, and the lifestyle you’re selling. It doesn’t make sense to a lot of people, but it’s true. As an example, I sell macramé home décor. But people don’t just buy a macramé wall hanging, they’re buying the boho vibes they get when they walk into their room and see my wall hanging. They buy the feeling of comfort that comes from a room filled with things they love. They buy the idea that having this in their home will transform into something they can call THEIRS. I could talk for days about it, but in a nutshell, your products and business will send a message to people. Make sure whatever that message is, that it’s something you’re proud of and that you can stand by it even if no one else is standing by you.

Me: Awwww thanks so much for taking the time to answer my questions! I love your business, and wish you all the luck in the world!

You can follow Rope & Rose on Insta at @ropeandrose (she’s most active there!) But she also has a Facebook page by the same name. Make sure to also check out her Etsy shop RopeandRose to see her products and upcoming classes if you’re in her area! (Yes- Brittney can TEACH you how to make adorable macramé!). She also does custom orders, so if there’s something you’re looking for, make sure to look her up! She loves to chat through DMs too!

Forces of Destiny: April 2018 ComLINKS

*This post is part of a link up started by Jenmarie over at Anakin and His Angel. Each month she has a different galactic topic for us to explore and write about. This month we’re talking about our favorite episode so far from season 2 Forces of Destiny!

“The choices we make, the actions we take, moments both big and small- shape us into forces of destiny.” // Maz Kanata, Forces of Destiny Introduction

Disney just released new episodes for Forces of Destiny! I honestly love these adorable little shorts because they offer us inside looks into the characters we already know and love! I especially love that Disney has focused on the female characters of Star Wars for this show. I think that it’s so great that we can show little girls (and big girls!) that it’s totally cool for them to love Star Wars!

Image from StarWars.com

Disney released this series last year, and they just recently added some more shows for season 2! It was really hard for me to pick a favorite, but I decided to go with episode 2, “Unexpected Company.” First, I loved this one because it features my fave girl Ahsoka Tano again! It also showed the awkward relationship between Anakin and Padme, which is a guilty pleasure of mine. The best part of this episode, however, was the last 30 seconds.

Padme: “You know, you and Anakin make a good team.”

Ahsoka: “Thanks…. I could say the same about the two of you.”

Padme: (looking very guilty) “Thank you, Ahsoka.”

Soooooo….. Ahsoka knows?! Honestly it totally made my day knowing that she does!

That episode was my favorite, but I wanted to give an honorable mention to “The Path Ahead.” It’s an episode featuring Luke and Yoda. No female characters are in this episode. So why would Disney decide to change up their show, which was to feature the women of Star Wars, and have an episode with only male characters?

To show that Star Wars is for everyone. We don’t need to have a special show just for female characters and a special show just for male characters. Forces of Destiny isn’t a girl’s show. It’s a Star Wars show. And Star Wars is for everyone. Girls, boys, grandparents, business owners, gamers, musicians, scientists, politicians, teachers, mothers, fathers- everyone. Star Wars is for fans who’ve been around since 1977, or fans whose first Star Wars movie was The Last Jedi.

Star Wars is for everyone.

Have you watched Forces of Destiny? Which episode was your favorite? And I’d love to hear how you feel about Star Wars being for everyone! Let me know in the comments!

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in Concert!

I first saw an ad for the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra playing the film score to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone last year. I wanted to go so badly, but I was going to be out of town during the show. I was so disappointed! So when I saw that they were doing it again with the Chamber of Secrets, I knew I had to get a ticket!Processed with VSCO with m5 preset

I decided to go all out in my Hufflepuff uniform! I hadn’t been able to debut my new robe or cardigan yet, so I was very excited for the chance to do it! I’m usually a pretty shy person and don’t like to be noticed with my outfits, so I was a little nervous that I was going to be too extra.

But my fears were instantly put aside when I arrived! Lots of kids (and plenty of adults) were dressed up in the Hogwarts best! Wands, robes, scarves, and ties were seen everywhere! I felt really confident in my outfit, and was really happy that I decided to go all out! I definitely learned that if you love something, don’t be ashamed about it! Have fun, be yourself, and experience the magic!

Me and my Potterhead friend Whitney!

I would totally do this again! Since I’ll be moving to Arizona this summer, I’m already stalking the Phoenix Symphony to see when their shows are!

Have you been to one of these movies in concert before? What did you see? I’d love to hear about it in the comments!

6 Reasons Why Slytherins are Amazing

Or perhaps in Slytherin, You’ll make your real friends, These cunning folks use any means to achieve their ends. // The Sorting Hat, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

This is part of a series I’m doing on each of the Hogwarts’ houses! You can check out Hufflepuff here (Ravenclaw and Gryffindor coming soon!)

Slytherins get a lot of bad rap- mostly because of our boy Draco Malfoy and many of the Death Eaters. Oh, and maybe because He Who Must Not Be Named himself was in that house. But a few bad apples don’t ruin the whole bunch! I’m here to tell you 6 reasons why Slytherins are super awesome.

Image from Pottermore.com

  1. Slytherins are ambitious. If you need something done or want something desperately- the Slytherins are your friends! They aren’t going to let something they want slip through their grasp. They’ll work their tails off until they get it. Nothing is too hard for them!
  2. Slytherins are cunning. The snake isn’t the mascot for Slytherin house on coincidence! Slytherins cook up plans that are almost fool-proof every time. They can read between the lines and find the loop-holes in almost everything. Slytherins aren’t going to let a few snags get in their way!
  3. Slytherins are resourceful. They aren’t wasting time or money willy-nilly because they can’t make up their mind. They’re going to plan out what’s needed and find the best deals to make it happen. If you’re having a party, you’ll definitely need to look up your nearest Slytherin for help. They’ll make sure it’s the best it can be (remember they’re ambitious!), but also make sure it’s not going to break the bank if it doesn’t have to.
  4. Slytherins are leaders. Slytherins are the ones you can look up to. They’re the ones taking the ship by the wheel when everyone else is floating in the breeze. They’re going to stand tall for their beliefs- no matter what. You might even call them traditionalists! They’re that solid rock that we all need in our lives.
  5. Slytherins have charisma. People are drawn to Slytherins. They just have something about them! They have big personalities that make people appreciate what they have to offer. They’re going to draw people in.
  6. Slytherins are disciplined. Once a Slytherin makes up his/her mind about something, they’ll stick to it. Starting a new workout plan? The Slytherin isn’t going to quit three days into it. Trying to get on the honor roll? The Slytherin is going to study every day for it. Looking for a job promotion? The Slytherin is going to be the best employee he/she can be. They’re not quitters.

Obviously, these traits aren’t just for Slytherins! There are plenty of charismatic Ravenclaws, disciplined Hufflepuffs, and resourceful Gryffindors. The Sorting Hat listens to your desires, so you can be in whichever house you feel like is the best fit!

What house do you belong in? Do you have any other ways that Slytherins are amazing? I’d love to hear about them in the comments!

Fandom Fashion: Po-Zu Rey Boots- Why You Should Definitely Be Buying These (Even if You’re Not a Star Wars Fan)

If you’re a Star Wars cosplayer (especially if you do Rey), you’ve probably debated on purchasing the official Rey boots from Po-Zu. I’m currently working on putting together a Rey cosplay (TFA/Scavenger), and decided to splurge on the Po-Zu boots!

Image from Starwars.com

And boy am I glad I did!

I cannot say enough good things about them! I was super nervous because I was ordering internationally. If they didn’t fit or something was wrong, I was going to have to fit the bill to return/exchange them, and I didn’t want to do that! Especially because they do have a pretty hefty price tag. I was really careful to measure my foot exactly like the instructions said. I also read the reviews A LOT.

Rey Boots Review.png

When I finally hit the purchase button, I was even more nervous! But they showed up in about a week (which is amazing since they come from Europe and I live in Hawaii- the USPS can’t always deliver me a package from the mainland in that short of a time period!). The box was gorgeous, and the shoes were packaged so nicely! They were even more beautiful in person.

Then came the moment of reckoning! I put the shoes on and they were a perfect fit! I tried them on with regular no-show socks, and the fit was amazing. I haven’t tried them on with thick socks, but they will still be able to fit because I had wiggle room. Plus, I’m going to be moving to Arizona this summer, and planning on cosplaying with them there (and crossing my fingers to join the Rebel Legion!). I don’t want to be sweating in them, so the regular socks will probably be my go-to.

Processed with VSCO with m5 preset

The fit was perfect, but the comfort level was off the charts. I have never worn a shoe that was as cushion-y as these! I definitely could walk around a convention center, hike up the stairs on Ahch-To, and battle with Kylo Ren and not feel sore! I was worried that the shoe would be a cosplay-only shoe, but I’m pretty sure I’ll be living in them all fall/winter!

You might be thinking, well I’m not into cosplay and I’m not wanting to have any galactic boots, so why should I get these? One of the coolest aspects of these shoes isn’t that they are screen accurate, comfortable, or just plain awesome. It’s that they are ethical and natural! These shoes weren’t made in sweat factories by children. Also, none of the materials used are harmful to the workers in the factories. Because of the care and concern put into these shoes, the price is higher. But these aren’t shoes that you’ll throw away after a season. These are shoes you’ll be able to wear for years. They won’t end up with the millions of pairs of shoes that end up in landfills. And since they’re natural, when you do decide it’s time to part with them (which will probably be never for me!), you’ll feel better about it!

Processed with VSCO with m5 preset

The company also makes casual Rey shoes (inspired by her tabards), tennis shoes with porgs, Rebel/Resistance shoes, Chewbacca boots, and Rey’s Jedi boots! Men can grab some screen accurate shoes of Finn and Poe, stormtrooper boots, and Star Wars designed tennis shoes as well. And most of these shoes come in children’s sizes too (which are less expensive, so if you have small feet you can save yourself some money!).

You can still join in on the fun without Star Wars themed shoes though! Po-Zu has lots of other “regular” styled shoes that you can purchase!

Processed with VSCO with m5 preset

Have you purchased these boots? Or any shoes from Po-Zu? I’m definitely planning on getting some more in the future! Let me know which ones I should get in the comments!

Spoiler Free Review of “Star Wars Battlefront II: Inferno Squad” by Christie Golden

It’s all for the glory of the Empire, honey, and don’t you forget it. // Dahna, Star Wars Battlefront II: Inferno Squad

Processed with VSCO with m5 preset

As evil as the Galactic Empire was, I absolutely love reading about it- especially from the perspective of those working for it. I guess it feeds into my Dark Side a little bit! So when I saw this book at Target, I decided to give it a go.

I’ve never once played any real Star Wars video games (unless we count Lego Star Wars on my Gameboy Advanced!). I don’t even own a video game system. (I know- I’m a disgrace to nerd culture.) So I was a little worried I would be completely lost while reading this. I also never read the prequel for the original Battlefront game. But you definitely do not need to to have played the video game, or read the prequel for the first video game. I thoroughly enjoyed the book without any of the background knowledge.

The story was intriguing, and seeing the “special forces” of the Empire was a lot of fun. If you like reading about spies, you’ll also enjoy this book! At times it seemed like the story was a bit slow (especially at the beginning), but as you got into it the plot thickened and got a lot more interesting.

After I read the book, I did decide to go and watch the cutscenes (or “movie”) from the video game. It’s basically the in-between times of the game-play with the story-line. It definitely added perspective to the story! Even if you are like me and don’t play video games, I highly recommend doing this! You can watch it below, but be prepared that it’s almost 2 hours long. You can also watch the “up next” video which shows some set-up to The Last Jedi.

Iden Versio was definitely a favorite character of mine. Her character was developed in a way that made you sympathize with her (which you don’t always feel when reading about the “bad guys”). The book also makes watching the cutscenes more emotional!

Have you read this book? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
