Spoiler-free Review of Star Wars: Lost Stars by Claudia Gray

I’ve always been a reader! They’ve provided adventures, knowledge, and a place to go when life gets crazy. I’m definitely a little picky though, and I do not enjoy reading contemporary or romance books. So when I saw this book at Target about a year ago, I got super excited!

It had been AGES since I had read a Star Wars book! I read a few of the kids books (I don’t even know what they were called, but I think they were about Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan before TPM), but that was back when I was 12 or so. I never really picked up the other books in the Expanded Universe.

But with the resurgence of Star Wars lately, new books have been everywhere! I’ll admit, the beautiful cover drew me into this book more than the summary! (I don’t even think I read the inside flap before I bought it!) But then it just sat on my bookshelf. I think I was scared to read it. What if it ruined Star Wars? What if it didn’t fit into the universe well?

I was wrong. When I finally read it, I read the book in one complete sitting (taking a break only to watch a movie- I was on a flight from Phoenix to Hawaii). I was blown away by the depth of these characters. I loved learning more about the inside workings of the Imperial Academy and officers. Suddenly they don’t all seem like the evil minions of the Empire. They have personalities, families, and friends. And ultimately, we learn that love really is stronger than anything else.

I would definitely recommend this book to any Star Wars fan. It’s in the young adult genre, so it’s not a difficult read. Even if you’re not a Star Wars fan, I think you would enjoy the story. The story spans episodes 4-6 and sets up The Force Awakens very well. I’m definitely rooting for a sequel!
